The Amazing Catch Essay - 1024 Words

Amanda Dennis Laura Toomb Interpersonal Communication September 6, 2014 The Amazing Catch I am writing this paper on the video clip of the amazing catch made by the ball girl. This paper is going to be my perception of the video as I go through the three stages of perception. I will also be explaining my thoughts throughout the three stages of perception while watching the video. In addition, I will in the end be deciding whether or not I believe the video to be true or fake. Selection. Selection is defined in the book as the following â€Å"The process of attending to a stimulus.† (Floyd, pg. 109) I have watched this video over and over before writing this paper, but the first time I watched it nothing really stood out to me besides†¦show more content†¦Those four schemas are physical constructs, role constructs, interaction constructs, and psychological constructs. I however didn’t really use all four of those constructs when watching the amazing catch. I used three of the four schema, the physical, role and interaction construc ts were the ones I used while classifying the information I perceived. When it comes to the physical constructs, it emphasizes people’s physical attributes. I noticed the girl wasn’t very tall, she was probably mid twenties, and that she had a slim body shape, which are all factors that make the catch hard to believe. The role constructs emphasize people’s social or professional position. I noticed at the end of the video was that she was a ball girl, and most ball girl or boys don’t ever go for a ball if it is in play or could potentially stay in play which I thought was a tad bit odd. The last construct that I used is the interaction construct. The interaction construct emphasizes people’s behaviors and I noticed that the girl kept her head down until she was in the chair with the camera on her. I find that weird because if you had just made a catch as amazing as that in a major league baseball game the last thing you would be doing is calmly jog ging back to your seat. You would be showing off and admiring all of the cheers you were getting from the crowd. Of Montaigne Essays - Literature, Epistemologists, French Nobility

Of Montaigne One of the most influential writer during the French Renaissance, Michel de Montaigne, was known for speaking his mind and communicating himself to the readers openly. Montaigne writings were famous for weighing himself and his beliefs in an essay format, popularizing this genre. The French essayist unique talent lied in the fact he was able to express his thoughts as a introspection and critic of himself, making him "see himself as an average human being"(1) This relatability between him and the audience ranged from descriptions of himself or his particular habits such as "does his best thinking on horseback" or "prefers glasses to metal cups". Though these comments and confessions may seem irrelevant, they create a powerful persona projected towards the readers causing some of them to question his genuineness. This is shown clearly in his piece, Of Books. Of Books describes Montaigne thoughts on reading books as a casual reader and gripes on reading scholarly or even just uninteresting books. He goes on to recount his favourite authors, most beloved books, his way of reading, and his reasons for reading whatever he reads. Montaigne is incredibly honest with his flaws towards his readers, whether it is about his particular reading patterns or himself as a person. He is truly genuine as he explains all of his reasoning behind the opinions and values he supports. To exemplify this, he goes on to demonstrates the little effort he expands when he is not able to understand a piece. "I come across difficult passages in my reading I never bit my nails over them: after making a charge or two I let them be ...If one book wearies me I take up another"(2) His justification was that "I seek in books only to give myself pleasure by honest amusement" which is the objective of most nonscholar readers. Montaine writing remains authentic because he con nects the experience and qualities of being human. The sense of reliability is crowded within the essays. An example would be when he states, "What I do not see in the first attack, I see less by persisting". This statement lets the audience sympathize with the writer and the apply this to other points of their life when they faced tough task and encounters. He is uncommonly genuineness towards himself and even his knowledge or lack thereof in his writings. Montaigne is also known for his beliefs about the the "basic unity to human experience"(2) and the acceptance of humans traits and flaws. In this essay, he first provides heavy detailed information about the exceedingly deformed conjoined identical twins. He described the child in great length about not just the appearance but the fact that it could walk, it had a peculiar cry and that he was unwilling to take nourishment from his nurses beast. Making the analogy, "to the king that he will maintain under the union of his laws these various parts and factions of our states", he explains how the child is able to function with these multiple limbs and extra appendages. He then recounts his own experience, meeting a shepherd who was deformed without genitals but was no less of a person. The shepherd is bearded, has desires and likes to touch women, proving Montaigne point of deformities and injuries do not define the person. The french essayist tells the story of love of God and how thro ugh his eyes, they were all his creation and created just as intended. There were no deformities in the creations of God but human traits and conditions. Montaigne asserts that "We call contrary to nature what happens contrary to custom; nothing is anything but according to nature, whatever it may be." His reasoning was that the "custom" that we like to believe is the standard is false. He believed that "nature", the possibility of everything, was the custom we should believe in and there are no errors even if it does not fit our individual perspective of the "custom". Whatever comes in nature is natural in the eyes of God. And the same should be true of us. The purpose of this piece is to commentate on society views of the unnatural and the ones who do not

About the United States Postal Service (USPS) Early History of the U.S. Postal Service The United States Postal Service first began moving the mail on July 26, 1775, when the Second Continental Congress named Benjamin Franklin as the nations first Postmaster General. In accepting the position, Franklin dedicated his efforts to fulfilling George Washingtons vision. Washington, who championed a free flow of information between citizens and their government as a cornerstone of freedom, often spoke of a nation bound together by a system of postal roads and post offices. Publisher William Goddard (1740-1817) first suggested the idea of an organized U.S. postal service in 1774, as a way to pass the latest news past the prying eyes of colonial British postal inspectors. Goddard formally proposed a postal service to Congress nearly two years before the  adoption of the Declaration of Independence. Congress took no action on Goddards plan until after the battles of Lexington and Concord in the spring of 1775. On July 16, 1775, with revolution brewing, Congress enacted the Constitutional Post as a way to ensure communication between the general populace and the patriots preparing to fight for Americas independence. Goddard was reported to have been deeply disappointed when Congress chose Franklin as Postmaster General. The Postal Act of 1792 further defined the role of the Postal Service. Under the act, newspapers were allowed in the mail  at low rates to promote the spread of information across the states. To ensure the sanctity and privacy of the mails, postal officials were forbidden to open any letters in their charge unless they were determined to be  undeliverable. The Post Office Department issued its first postage stamps on July 1, 1847. Previously, letters were taken to a Post Office, where the postmaster would note the postage in the upper right corner. The postage rate was based on the number of sheets in the letter and the distance it would travel. Postage could be paid in advance by the writer, collected from the addressee on delivery, or paid partially in advance and partially upon delivery. Until the  adoption of the Postal Reorganization Act of 1970, the U.S. Postal Service functioned as a regular, tax-supported, agency of the federal government. According to the laws under which it now operates, the U.S. Postal Service is a semi-independent federal agency, mandated to be revenue-neutral. That is, it is supposed to break even, not make a profit. In 1982, U.S. postage stamps became postal products, rather than a form of taxation. Since then, the bulk of the cost of operating the postal system has been paid for by customers through the sale of postal products and services rather than taxes. Each class of mail is also expected to cover its share of the costs, a requirement that causes the percentage rate adjustments to vary in different classes of mail, according  to the costs associated with the processing and delivery characteristics of each class. According to the costs of operations, U.S. Postal Service rates are set by the Postal Regulatory Commission according to the recommendations of the Postal Board of Governors. Look, the USPS is an Agency! The USPS is created as a government agency under Title 39, Section 101.1 of the United States Code which states, in part: (a) The United States Postal Service shall be operated as a basic and fundamental service provided to the people by the Government of the United States, authorized by the Constitution, created by Act of Congress, and supported by the people. The Postal Service shall have as its basic function the obligation to provide postal services to bind the Nation together through the personal, educational, literary, and business correspondence of the people. It shall provide prompt, reliable, and efficient services to patrons in all areas and shall render postal services to all communities. The costs of establishing and maintaining the Postal Service shall not be apportioned to impair the overall value of such service to the people. Under paragraph (d) of Title 39, Section 101.1, Postal rates shall be established to apportion the costs of all postal operations to all users of the mail on a fair and equitable basis. No, the USPS is a Business! the Postal Service takes on some several very non-governmental attributes via the powers granted to it under Title 39, Section 401, which include: power to sue (and be sued) under its own name;power to adopt, amend and repeal its own regulations;power to enter into and perform contracts, execute instruments, and determine the character of, and the necessity for, its expenditures;power to buy, sell and lease private property; and,power to build, operate, lease and maintain buildings and facilities. All of which are typical functions and powers of a private business. However, unlike other private businesses, the Postal Service is exempt from paying federal taxes. USPS can borrow money at discounted rates and can condemn and acquire private property under governmental rights of eminent domain. The USPS does get some taxpayer support. Around $96 million is budgeted annually by Congress for the Postal Service Fund. These funds are used to compensate USPS for postage-free mailing for all legally blind persons and for mail-in election ballots sent from US citizens living overseas. A portion of the funds also pays USPS for providing address information to state and local child support enforcement agencies. Under federal law, only the Postal Service can handle or charge postage for handling letters. Despite this virtual monopoly worth some $45 billion a year, the law merely requires the Postal Service to remain revenue neutral, neither making a profit or suffering a loss. How is the Postal Service ‘Business’ Doing Financially? Though intended to be a self-funding entity, the Postal Service has suffered a dismal string of financial losses since the 1970s, when it sometimes at least broke even. After the Great Recession of 2008, the volume of advertising mail- the vast majority of mail- dropped sharply as many businesses switched to less-costly email correspondence. Since then, mail volume has continued to drop, creating a crisis for a business whose costs are all but guaranteed to rise annually. For example, the number of addresses to which the USPS must deliver increases constantly. In FY2018, the USPS suffered what it called a â€Å"controllable† operating deficit of $3.9 billion and reports that it expects costs to continue to rise in FY2019. â€Å"Compensation and benefits expenses are planned to increase by $1.1 billion in FY2019, due to wage increases by $0.6 billion resulting from contractual general increases and cost-of-living adjustments.† In addition, the agency sees its retiree health benefits and transportation expenses to increase by $1 billion in FY2019.
